Your site is either earning leads or it’s a digital brochure. The Starfish Substrate is a five-layer build system for sites that produce: a fast technical foundation, a brand-accurate design system, AI-ready schema and content architecture, conversion-engineered user flows, and a post-launch maintenance plan that keeps the asset compounding. We build on Astro, Next.js, Webflow, and Shopify. We ship with 90+ Lighthouse scores and complete AI-search markup by default. East Texas and Shreveport-Bossier businesses, since 2017.
What is Web Development at Starfish?
Web development, for us, is the practice of shipping a website that produces measurable revenue for a small or mid-sized business. Not an award-winning portfolio piece. Not a template with swapped photos. A custom site engineered for three parallel audiences: your buyers, Google’s crawlers, and the AI search engines that now generate a growing share of informational queries.
Most agency builds optimize for one of those audiences. They ship beautiful sites that load slowly (designers first). Or they ship SEO-optimized sites that look like they came out of 2016 (marketers first). Or they ship technically pristine sites no buyer wants to spend time on (developers first). Real SMB sites have to serve all three.
The practical consequence: every build decision has to pass three tests. Does it improve how buyers experience the site? Does it improve how Google and AI systems read the site? Does it improve how the business operates the site after launch? If a decision passes one or two tests but fails the third, we redesign that decision until it passes all three.
This is slower than a template swap. It’s also why our builds still produce leads three years after launch while most agency sites need a rebuild inside 24 months.
Why Web Development matters in 2026
Three things shifted over the last 18 months.
First, Core Web Vitals became a hard floor for SEO. Sites below a 75 Lighthouse performance score on mobile are deprioritized in Google’s ranking systems. Most WordPress installs with stock themes and plugin bloat score in the 40s. That means legacy sites are losing organic rankings to faster competitors regardless of content quality. Speed is a ranking factor. Finally.
Second, schema markup became the single highest-leverage technical investment for AI visibility. Sites with complete Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Person schema are cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews at dramatically higher rates than sites without. The work is front-loaded. Once deployed, it compounds on every page.
Third, the bar for conversion design rose. Desktop-first layouts, generic hero sections, and ambiguous calls to action no longer convert the way they did in 2022. Mobile-first is assumed. Personality in copy matters. Named experts, proof, and real photos beat stock imagery and generic founder bios. Sites that look like they came out of a 2020 Squarespace library convert at half the rate of sites built for how buyers actually shop in 2026.
The practical consequence: a site built in 2020 is now working against you in three simultaneous ways. Rebuild economics in 2026 favor the businesses willing to ship a modern stack.
The Starfish Substrate
Our five-layer build system.
Layer 01
Structure
We start with information architecture. Every page has a job. Every URL exists for a reason. Sitemaps are planned before designs are drawn. Service pages, location pages, proof pages, contact flows, and blog infrastructure are scoped based on your category, territory, and buyer journey. If the architecture is wrong, every downstream layer inherits the problem.
Layer 02
Speed
The technical foundation. We build on Astro for content-heavy marketing sites, Next.js for app-like sites, Webflow for client-managed marketing sites, and Shopify for ecommerce. Every build ships with a 90+ Lighthouse mobile performance score, images served in modern formats with srcset, fonts loaded with font-display swap, minimal render-blocking JavaScript, and a CDN-fronted deploy on Vercel, Netlify, or the client’s hosting of choice. Speed is non-negotiable.
Layer 03
Schema
Every build ships with complete structured data. Organization and LocalBusiness schema sitewide. Service schema on every service page. FAQPage schema on every page with Q-and-A content. Person schema for every named author or team member. BreadcrumbList schema on every sub-page. Article schema on every blog post. WebSite schema with SearchAction. Plus an llms.txt file for AI crawlers. This is the layer that most builds skip. It’s also the layer that multiplies the value of every other layer.
Layer 04
Signal
Conversion engineering. Every page is designed around a primary action. Contact forms are short, labeled for clarity, and integrated with your CRM. Phone numbers are tap-to-call on mobile. Calls to action are specific (not “Learn More”). Proof is placed where buyers hesitate. Trust signals (reviews, credentials, named team, case studies) appear before the ask. Exit-intent behavior is measured. Scroll depth, click paths, and form abandonment are tracked. Every design choice either helps the buyer move forward or it gets removed.
Layer 05
Shipboard
Post-launch operations. Maintenance retainers for framework updates, security patches, plugin upgrades, and performance monitoring. Content publishing workflows for your team if you’re producing in-house. Analytics review with monthly performance reports. Design iteration quarterly based on behavior data. Sites that compound are sites that get maintained. Sites that drift become technical debt.

How we approach it
Step 01 — Discover & Architect
Two to four weeks. Stakeholder interviews, content inventory of your current site, competitive audit, buyer journey mapping, and information architecture. Output is a sitemap and a functional spec both sides sign off on before design starts.
Step 02 — Design System
Three to five weeks. Brand-accurate design system built in Figma. Typography, color palette, components, responsive grid, and example pages. Iterated through 2 to 3 review rounds. Locked before build starts.
Step 03 — Build & Integrate
Five to eight weeks. Front-end build, CMS setup, schema deployment, integrations (CRM, analytics, booking, payment, etc.), and content population. Staged on a review URL with weekly progress check-ins.
Step 04 — Launch & Verify
Two weeks. QA sweeps. Cross-browser testing. Accessibility audit. Performance tuning. Migration execution and redirect verification. Search Console setup. Analytics validation. Go-live with rollback plan ready. 30-day post-launch support period.
Who Web Development is for (and who it isn’t)
A Starfish build is a fit if you check most of these:
- You’re replacing or launching a site that has to produce measurable leads or revenue
- You want a custom build, not a template with swapped photos
- Your budget is $3,500 or higher
- You can commit to a 4-week minimum timeline for meaningful builds
- You plan to maintain the site after launch (either with us or with an in-house team)
Not a fit if:
- You need a site live in 3 weeks with zero design iteration
- You want a $500 template site with swapped photos (we can refer you to a template partner)
- You’re unwilling to provide content, photos, and decision-making capacity during the build
- You want a site that never changes after launch (those sites start losing value within a year)
Tools we use
- Astro for content-heavy marketing sites
- Next.js for app-like experiences and marketing sites with complex interactivity
- Webflow for marketing sites where client teams manage content after launch
- Shopify for ecommerce
- Sanity and Contentful for headless CMS
- Figma for design systems and comps
- Vercel and Netlify for deployment
- Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics 4
- CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics for phone-call attribution
- StarLeads CRM for lead capture and nurture
- Lighthouse and axe for performance and accessibility auditing
- Schema Markup Validator for structured data verification
Is your site ready to compound? A 10-point checklist
- Does your site load in under 2.5 seconds on a 4G mobile connection?
- Is your mobile Lighthouse performance score 90 or higher?
- Do you have Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema deployed?
- Are your forms integrated with a CRM, not just emailing to an inbox?
- Do you track phone calls as conversions with call tracking numbers?
- Is your site WCAG 2.1 AA conformant on automated audits?
- Do you have dedicated location pages for every city you serve?
- Is your content production workflow actively used (not just a blog with 2 posts from 2023)?
- Do you have a post-launch maintenance plan or in-house team?
- Can you trace at least 50% of your inbound leads back to specific site pages?
If you answered “no” to 4 or more, a rebuild or optimization engagement will produce measurable lead lift within 90 days. If you answered “no” to 7 or more, your site is actively costing you revenue.
Why Starfish for Web Development
We’ve been shipping production-grade sites for East Texas and Shreveport-Bossier SMBs since 2017. Every build includes SEO and GEO foundations by default, so you’re not bolting on optimization after launch. We build with your marketing program in mind, so the site is the operating surface for everything else we run (SEO, paid, social, CRM). You own the code, the CMS, the domain, and every credential. No lock-in. And we maintain the sites we build. Most agencies ship and disappear. We stay.
